I bought a brand new car during presidents day sale for 10k under msrp, cheaper than cpo snd non-cpo models 2-3 years older

Everyone will say buy used, but also pay attention to car sales. Sometimes the cashback is stupid high.

pos rep. this is what im talking about. these used prices aint that much better than a sale on a new one

Dave Ramseys philosophy is that you shouldn't have more than half your income tied up in cars and pay for it in cash. If you can do both of those, then get what you want.

Dave Ramsey straight up told dude on the phone to only buy new if you're a millionaire. his advice doesn't make sense to me for what I'm looking at. For $3K more I'll buy new. :manny:

i don't know anything about auctions. seems like a lot of risk too if you don't know cars and how to fix them. :patrice:
Not if you are buying something with low mileage, most will still be under warranty.

You don’t even have to go to an auction really, just do a search in your area. I did a quick search and you can find similar cars for ~17k. That’s a big savings for just a year or two.

Certified used is a scam, especially for something this new. If you want to be super safe you can have a mechanic check the car about before you buy.

It is.

Honestly all of this depends on how much not having vehicle repair headaches mean to you.

Growing up my dad prided himself on never having a car note, but we had car issues constantly as we were always buying old cars for a couple grand max.

Im not doing that.

Also, with all the tech advances in a 2019 car, i couldnt go back and buy a 2012 with no AA/CarPlay, 360 cams, heat warmers (maybe), remote start (maybe), auto-stop, lane assist, drive assist, etc.

Its a diff world

But if saving several grand via auction sounds better than all that, by all means

I'd follow the other two principles a lot closer than just buying a used car for the sake of it. If it ain't breaking you and it isn't an absorbent amount of your net worth, then go for it. When listening to Dave Ramsey, you gotta remember, he caters his philosophies to people with little to no financial knowledge.

i can afford both. cash too. So let's say these are my options

brand new 2019 Honda Accord Sport, 0 miles for $26K MSRP for vs 2016 Honda Accord Sport 18K miles for $23K

I can knock the price down off the new car with dealer incentives and the price of the used car would go up for an extended warranty. but taking that away, the difference is only $3K. why wouldn't I go new?
Why would you even buy an extended warranty for a Honda :skip:

Whatever you decide to do OP, just make sure your interest isn't crazy. No more than 8%. Anything higher, and you'll be stuck paying for that car forever. :francis:

Certified pre-owned is a scam?? What the hell isn't when it comes to used cars??

“Certified” don’t mean nothing but a higher price tag.

The warranty goes with the car. They are charging OP an extra $7K just to say their mechanic checked it out. You can get any car checked out before you buy it for ~$100

What do you recommend on buying cars? New or used?

And with used what would be the best way not to get scammed or a lemon?

Definitely used, unless you just gotta bunch of extra money to waste.

Just do your research, everything you could want to know about a car can be easily found online.

You can see what similar cars are being sold for in your area. what kind of problems people are reporting with the car. Check the car fax, any recall reports, etc for the individual car you are considering. As long as you go in armed with information and a plan, and stick to it, you should be fine. And don’t let them sell you an extended warranty. It’s much cheaper to just put away ~$50 a month to create your own warranty fund.

I get them from the certified dealer. You have to do research on which car you want and where to get it. Toyota or Honda are really reliable which means the car is worth more than some other makes and models.
