As much as I love rap, it was the trojan horse that allowed mediocre culture vultures to thrive in black spaces. Back in the day if you wanted respect doing black music, you actually had to be about it. Teena Marie, Bobby Caldwell and Hall and Oates were respected cause they had talent and cuts.

He has no excuse. I was born in the late 80s but I knew who New Edition/BBD, Special Ed, H-Town, Keith Sweat, Rakim, Kool Moe Dee, G Rap, MC Shan, Fat Boys, Tribe Called Quest were, etc. I was either a baby or a little kid from 89 to 94 but I can tell you about at least 50% of the artists because my brother and my sisters played the music in their rooms all day. That’s what happens when you let in white boys who weren’t immersed in the culture growing up. He should’ve had somebody playing 90s and early 2000s music for him and telling about the artists. Brandy was the #1 Black R&B teen artist. Like cmon breh. That’s like a rapper saying ten years from now they didn’t know Chris Brown and Rihanna dated.

Very late to this thread, but Jack recently said in an interview that he had to spend time going back and listening to older music because it wasn't played around him when he was growing up. This whole situation is a reflection of that. If you didn't have anybody around you listening to 90s R&B, or you didn't watch Moesha reruns, this is what happens.
Of course, we're in an era where if you're curious, you can listen to all the classic music you want for $10 a month, but it's easy to take that opportunity for granted.
