Eddie maneuvered very well in an improvisational way considering he had been blind sided by that disrespectful comment.
First, Cavett tried to paint Eddie as someone who doesn't read (whether he does or not) because when Eddie said he had SEEN it, Cavetts' retorts with, "On a shelf?"
Then, Cavett hits him with the blatant disrespect by saying the slur TO Eddie. I believe this is when Eddie realized there was an underlying motive to this line of questioning - he responded in a very witty way that inferred Cavett was appealing to a white supremacy code shared amongst other whites.
If you pay attention, this 'lifting of the veil' rendered Cavett surprised and stumbling over his words to 'soften' his intent and assuage Eddie that they were 'friends' by pulling the ol', "Well I have a black friend, I did something with another black person... uhhh".
Eddie made Cavett trip over his words which is a incredible feat against a professional talker (host).
Didnt get to see the full clip, though. This is based on the clip in the OP.
