It was the other way around when I attended my low budget ass high school. We didn't qualify for free lunch because my granny made just a few dollars too much. So my friends would clown me cause I had to pay for lunch, which was only like $1.35 in the 90s because poverty was so normal in my neighborhood.. I couldn't imagine not having a dollar to send my child to school so they could eat shyts crazy when u really think about

I remember the same, it wasn't looked at as bad, because it was so common, my family didn't qualify for free lunch, we weren't in that range of poverty, (which is basically Section 8 level) and I was wondering why I had to pay and other kids didn't, but it was never something that was made fun of, this was in elementary. I asked my Mom about it, and she just kind of told me to shut up.

I know in Florida if you have library or lunch debt your have to pay that shyt before you can participate in a lot of school events including graduation. And the lunch ladies weren't hired by the school they worked for some company that the county paid to serve us food.
Same with textbooks. I couldn't get my cap and gown until I paid for my textbook somebody stole from me.
