I think only 3 year olds are allowed to run the triple crown.
why only 3 years old? why not 4 years old and so on?
I guess it's a maturity thing. Maybe at 3 yo they're at their physical peak since these races are the most coveted.

Yea I looked it up, I guess the 3 year old thing goes back to a tradition that started in Europe. They're are 4 year olds that race and they are faster, but the triple crown is limited to 3 year olds as that's when they begin to gain their racing legs while they still remain a bit raw and can be unpredictable. So apparently these aren't the fastest horses in the world.
