The simple answer is 10% of the winners share of the purse!
Normally, at most North American tracks, the first 5 finishers are the only horses that get paid.
The winner usually receives 60% of the total purse; 2nd place receives 20%; 3rd place 12%; 4th place 6%, and the 5th place horse receives 2%.
So, in a race where the total purse is $50000, the winning horse receives 60% of that purse ($30000). The winning rider would then get 10% ($3000).

sometimes you see these bad ass animals like a black jaguar or a white siberian tiger and you just marvel at how awesome they are.

i sort of look at these horses the same way - for what they do, they are the most elite specimen of horse (great athletes in the animal kingdom).

You disqualified from baddest horse consideration when you not even built to complete 2 legs of the triple crown without being put down. Smarty Jones was styling on nikkas both the Kentucky and Preakness and just barely got clipped at the Belmont.
