My words may fall on deaf ears in this thread, but after reviewing this play over and over again, it seems clear to me now that Cam never had any intention of diving for the ball.
That's not to say he wasn't trying to get the fumble. However (and this is for previous football players) his instincts told him to grab and go. Nobody breaks down like that when trying to sell out for a fumble. Look at the lunge he takes toward the football. You don't do that unless you're planning on scooping the ball and running (which is a terrible football play given the situation).
Look at Demarcus Ware in the frame. THAT'S what you're supposed to do the moment you are within reach of a fumble. He immediately drops to the ground and sells out for the balls. Look at his left leg. It's getting ready to plant on the ground, his instincts take over, and his knee slides forward, his hip goes lateral, and his upper body lunges toward the ball.
Now take a look at Cam. He moves for the fumble at the same time as Ware, but never breaks down. He just lunges toward the fumble. And anyone who has ever been in a pile knows that the high man ALWAYS pulls up instinctively. That's why in most fumble drills, the guy who is directly in front of the ball learns the hard way that if he isn't the first to get low and lunge then someone from the side is coming in helmet first for his ankle.
@nyc_rebel what do you think? I think it's more bone headed than scared.
