I get his reasoning for not diving on the ball. With that said, his mistake was running to the ball straight up as if he was going to pick the ball up. He would have been better off just taking one step and diving to it. Not multiple steps.

People forget the ball bounced back to him anyway, he just couldn't get it.

That didn't lose the game. They were down by a touchdown, and it was about to be 4th and long after that play. It was already a long shot.
