I have a Sony A7S, somewhat out your budget. But it shoots movie quality video and can't be touched when it comes to low light.

Always
Get a $200 HD camcorder and use the rest of your budget to buy a decent tripod, light kit and maybe a microphone.
Frfr? Please explain. I'm new to cinematography and photography and am interested in filming and photographing myself cycling and cooking.

I'd personally look around for a used Panasonic FZ1000. Hybrid camera that takes fantastic stills, can record 4K video and has a mic input. If someone handed me $500 and said I could buy any camera I wanted for that amount, it would be that one. The Sony RX10 is a great choice as well.

If you want something smaller/pocketable, look at a Canon G7X or a Sony RX100.

If sensor size isn't an issue, the Sony HX80 would suffice as well. The Sony WX500 has a flip up screen as well - good for selfies/vloggers - but lacks some of the advanced features of the WX80.

Canon has a few deals on their site for refurbished cameras. I've bought a few from them over the years and these look/perform like brand new cameras.

Canon SX60 for $299. Bridge camera with a small sensor but takes solid stills and has a mic input, which is critical for good audio.

Canon PowerShot SX60 HS Refurbished

Canon G7X for $399. Pocketable option. Takes good stills and is ideal for vlogging. Lacks mic input however.

Canon PowerShot G7X Refurbished

Get either one of these and a cheap $50 action camera on Amazon and you're good to go to start off.

Yeah DSLRs aren't great at recording videos. Honestly if you have an iPhone set up a cloud storage to upload the videos and edit.

Your money should be spent on lighting, editing software and microphones if needed.
