Ivory Coast is in rebuilding mode but still expected them to make it out of the group stage. They are very undisciplined at the back. Although Aurier is a world class right back he does not defend well and only thinks of pushing up forward. They don't have the big superstar names they used to but still talented. They can learn from this and qualify for the World Cup 2018.

DR Congo has been on the come up these past few years. They were 3rd the last AFCON. Their coach Florent Ibenge is based in Congo and manages one of the top teams in the domestic league so he is on the ground and gets a chance to see local talent hence why they won CHAN 2016 which is the AFCON for players based in African clubs. So he has been able to find a good mix of locally based talent and European-based talent. Even with the loss of Bolasie, they are still good outsiders to win it all.

Gervinho performed for CIV. I feel after getting the monkey off their back they relaxed a lot and it definitely felt like the culmination of a long struggle instead of a beginning of an era. ACFON is always good at creating stars under the radar, the type that is not well regarded in Europe at least. Mboma had a decent career playing in Europe but the man was a beast for the NT and for my money better than Eto for Cameroon. The Egyptian era had a lot of Al Ahly players like Abou Treka and even some unrecognized names did the business for Nigeria when they won. I am not surprised that DRC has done well at the same time that Mazambe and Vita were playing well in the CAF champions league. I think there is something to having a mix of local players who understand the terrain, they are somewhat used to local conditions as well.

The teams loaded with European based players almost always disappoint producing both results and quality football.

This is why Tunisia is one of the most consistent teams in North Africa. They have a very stable and competitive domestic league, unlike Algeria and Morocco who rely almost entirely on French and Dutch academy :skip:

Algeria for all of its EPL players is lagging in its domestic league and development compared to Egypt and Tunisia.
