Can a point guard ever be the best player in the league?

Quality point guards are a dime a dozen. Other positions are harder to find thus are considered more valuable.
But why do other positions have higher ceilings than point guards, so to speak

a PG has been the MVP over the last 3 years and this is a topic?
I clearly stated in the OP that outside of Steph in '16 what PG has been considered the best player in the WORLD. Not whose won the most recent MVPs, two totally different things. Stop being dense

Kidd, easily. I mean if we're talking about the purest definition of a PG, then Jason Kidd did exactly that. He wasn't a ball hog, nor did he stop at simply being on "point". Dude was known as Mr. Triple Double. He was fast, stole, and passed like a beast. The only thing he didn't do was block. Which we of course have to give mention to the "Glove"....Payton was a beast, be he never really played a true PG, he was really a fast center.

Magic is obviously #1. But to answer your question OP....yes; Curry arguably is/was. Westbrook generated hype.

But lets keep one thing clear here. The positions in basketball are always presented with an asterisk. MJ could play any position, as could KG, Pippen, Payton, Miller, etc. Centers are really the only "specialty" position due to them being blocking machines. So they come with a height requirement. Every other position, can be handled by all stars.

They don't necessarily have higher ceilings but just significantly more competition at their position. Curry is probably the best pg in the nba but the next guys like paul, wall, lillard, irving, westbrook, thomas aren't that far behind. Even guys like conley, teague, lowry, walker, dragic, or holiday can play at a near elite level any night. And young guys ball, fultz, smith coming up. Lebron been unquestionably the best sf for a long time but, who has been considered the top pg during lebrons reign has changed a lot.
