they already got anti-depressants n shyt for pets. i got a yellow lab and she damn near has a heart attack everytime there's thunder. The vet gave us Valium. I know thats an anti-anxiety drug, but you get my point...

In regards to the thread, the way i see it...if animals were capable of suicide it would indicate that they are capable of complex thought. I would imagine that ability would be observable in other actions as well.

I hope your Vet gave you the valium for free. Dogs are naturally afraid of thunder. I have been around thousands of dogs and when thunder starts to roll, they all get busy.

If you're talking about a conscious decision to commit suicide, then you're getting into the question "Do animals have minds?" Can they consciously think and understand their existence in a frame of reference?

I mean, do they get sad... and want to end it all. Or get to a point where they feel there's no point in going on...

so they drown themselves or hurt themselves.

Of course they do, anyone who's had a dog knows that. Dogs can stop eating out of grief for example, and die of that.

Animals have minds, can't believe this is a serious question? They remember faces, orders, like some people more than others, can learn, sometimes they want to play other times they don't, etc...

We need to stop believing we are SO different from other animals.

Can an animal can grasp the concept of life and death, and make a conscious decision on whether or not if it wants to continue to live? I think no.
I do think animals can get so depressed they don't want to eat, but that's not technically committing suicide. I don't think they're saying "I eat to live, and in order for me to die, I will not eat" in their head.

I think animals choosing not to eat and eventually dying can be used to prove what all animals (even humans) need to survive. Which is a certain level of love and social acceptance from peers. Most animals in zoo's that are separated from their habitat are depressed. Before they let them go back into the wild they have to make sure they are comfortable enough on their own so they don't get rejected. That's essentially the same with humans. I remember hearing about an experiment done on babies where they were giving only food to survive. They weren't allowed to be held or given any attention other than food and they all eventually died.

I'm not sure why you can't believe it's a serious question. Unless of course you don't understand that a lack of motivation to consume food- doesn't necessarily mean that an organism has grasped of the concept of life/death.

Also, having a 'mind' doesn't mean that you have high intelligence or the capacity to ponder about the afterlife, or even give up on life.

i think dolphin might be one of the only ones that seem to off themselves, like fukk it.
