Can anybody school me on Steam gaming please???

I haven't bought a new console yet (still have a ridiculous backlog for my 360) and am still considering a ps4 but I also want to know more about Steam.

For home, I have a mac mini and am first of all wondering if the 4gb of memory will be sufficient. I like the idea of Steam because my Mac Mini is already hooked up to my flat screen so playing steam off of it seems like it could be really setup to what's already in place. Or I'm wondering if it might be worth it to wait for the Steam boxes to come out later on this year. I also want to know what they're being priced at. If they're going to be an ungodly sum of money, I'll probably just say fukk it and grab a ps4. Haven't been impressed with the console games so far this generation though

Steam is the greatest thing to happen to gaming... arguably ever.

All this new age console steez of digitally owning and installing games, all Valve did was give them a style for them to run with.

Steam's sales, specifically their Summer and to a lesser degree Winter Sales are the the best things to happen to gamers annually. Games launch at $50/$60 bucks, and within 2-4 months they can be had for $20-$40 via Steam sales. Not always, but usually.

Once you buy a game on steam, you own it for life. Digitally on your account. All games run on PC, but only some are Mac compatible. Make sure you check. Ymmv.

4gigs of RAM is pretty paltry. Hope you don't plan on playing anything released in the last couple of years unless it's a 2D platformer. And even then...

You'll want 8gigs to be safe. 16gb ideally.

Consoles have their place, and I love my ps4. Loved my 360. Some franchises make owning a console worth it. But the sheer number of games, the staggering difference in price for said games, and the fact that these games run better and at higher quality on PC makes it the best platform for gaming. Unless you're mainly just trying to play with your boys on the couch.

If you really want to get into PC gaming, and fully utilize Steam, build a PC.

If not for anything else, get games on the cheap for the future. I know, backlog and all, but prices are redikk sometimes. At 4GB, you aren't going to go that far with that and I'm doubting that the graphics card is up to par as well. Cop a console based one what you said. Also, never buy a Steam box, build your own piff for cheaper and better.

You buy a console game, and it is what it is. Forever.

On PC, modding communities allow for you to play a radically different game and experience than what you bought. You can play with custom made guns, characters, locations, etc. Sky is the limit.

Counterstrike was originally a simple fan made mod of Half Life. Look what it's become.

A mac mini is not good enough for modern gaming. It's not. No gpu, terrible ram, not happening. You'll need a new computer, real talk. Look at about spending a grand on a PC (not a mac) for something acceptable.

I've seen that you can use a 360 controller. The reason I always stayed away from pc gaming was because I hate using a keyboard for a game pad, I know I'll get shyt for that. Are you guys using a 360 controller, a keyboard or some other device?

Depends on the game. I use a 360 controller and a keyboard/mouse.

That gpu is kinda trash. A 750 is not gonna play games at anything but low or medium at best.

I use an X1 controller. It works with all games almost (except games that require mouse and keyboard only). Most games have controller support though. Steam even has a tv view where you can use a 360 or x1 controller to interact with the program

Need some advice,forgot all about steam for gaming,I'm leaving country and not takin my X1,gonna have it shipped to me sometime down the line,I do have a laptop I'm bringing with me that I've used maybe 6 times that I've owned it for a year,tryna see if I can use it for gaming,I don't need the latest games,I just need some type of entertainment while I'm transitioning in another country,it has i3 processor,4gb ram and 750gb HD,idk what other specs you would need to know to help me,but any advice would help

what exactly do you need to know?

you won't be able to play the latest 'AAA' games 'maxed out', but there's 1000's of games you can play. you can also use your x1 controller with the PC

I just looked up my laptop,it says I can easily double the ram to 8gb cuz of two memory slots,just want to be pointed in the right direction on how to get started,and yeah I def wanna know how to use x1 controller with it

I wouldn't worry about the memory. most games that would need more than 4gb would also need other specs you don't have

as far as I know you'll need to plug the x1 controller in via the usb cable, but after that it should just work

beyond that, download the steam client, sign up, and find a game you're interested in

steam is just "the shyt" dude. I mean, it's a marketplace that you buy games from. Your limiting factor is obviously going to be your computer. Try building a budget computer and seeing what you can get with 400$ or just buy one piece at a time as you save money up for it. Like others have said you can even use a controller for games you'd prefer to play with a controller. Steam also has sales all the time and you can cop some certified piffery for cheap.
