Nope. That man is doing it poorly, but you simply don't understand the basis of it. When church and social leaders have told your people for generations that the core of you is sinful, you're worthless, you're a carnal beast that needs taming, telling your women to do xyz to their hair or you can't learn in our schools, telling children their dark skin is ugly and if they do well in exams they'll be gifted with bleaching soap, when they realize they can't stop Carnival and try to water it down to to be more "civilized" like Venice's(or so they told themselves)...
...this is simply a natural progression and response. And not one priest will show their face during Carnival since, because they know. We have not forgotten. They will get ridiculed at the least, women with oiled bodies will hug them while laughing at them the entire time, and in more serious times oil would be poured on them and lit up or worse. We will celebrate how we want, we will explore our history and our own gods, we will appreciate who we are and no one will stop us from knowing and loving ourselves. It is the way of all such hypocrites and thieves to denigrate us and our creativity(see also: steelpan), to cheapen it in then public eye so it can be more easily stolen and commodified. Think that's an exaggeration? It's the same principle and process as gentrification. It's been their standard play for ages.

However I don't care if this was the most accurate representation of it. It still is retarded af.
Not saying the tradition is dumb, I respect and sympathize for sure, but a grown man re-enacting this in 2023 will always be retarded. Don't care the explanation.

Different approaches by differing factions, as Trinbago changed hands several times back and forth. Carnival at it's root was supposed to be a get-the-debauchery-out-of-your-system thing before the observance of Lent. Forty days of restraint, abstinence, fasting, yadda yadda, similar to Ramadan.
- Spanish clergy and/or lay people would often go to various towns during their celebrations to "chaperone" events and keep an eye on people to make sure they didn't go overboard, i.e. their usual guilt trips to make sure the heathens behaved. That was the Spanish way of things to make the oppression handed down seem less onerous. Being among the people, being more "accepting" of Creolization and buffer class creation games. Whatever.
- the British had no intention of even looking tolerant of anything, tried banning things outright and would go out in groups trying to disrupt and "pray things away"...you can guess how well that was received.
- the French took a look at the whole bundle of craziness and, in the way of pearl-clutchers everywhere, said "they'll never be be as good as us" and stuck behind their walls and had their own slackness going on. We shrugged and learned to make our own costumes, made our own musical instruments, made our own traditions to suit ourselves, rich or poor.
Because that is what Carnival is, despite them trying to define and redefine it to suit themselves and their comforts: freedom. That assertion, that celebration, can only come from us, not them. Never them. Because they will try. They cannot help themselves, they will always look to dominion in the end. Business by nature cannot abide loss of market share, and that is ultimately where their priorities lie. Since the international popularity of it has exploded, Caribbean people have moved all over and taken that ethos with them, now there are Carnivals all over that have nothing to do with them nor Lenten observations, there have been occasional pushes in religious circles to mess with it. Quiet inter-faith meetings, Catholic-Protestant-Islamic - especially from the Islamic faction - on how to get people back to "behaving" themselves. The international revivalists, the "prosperity" church crowd, all of them have tried organizing trips to get in the mix and do their hearts-and-minds dance. They've all failed.
It's how we knew what was coming with hip-hop in the States. We know how this dance goes with them. When they fail, they switch up and commoditize whatever to control it and make money.
They cannot help themselves, money is their god. And when money is your god...
