When I was kid this guy came out of nowhere, got a title shot and beat the Ultimate Warrior for the title.

He couldn't wrestle, promos were garbage, he looked like he was 60 when he was probably 35.

Then he went away for a bit, and I am watching some 97s RAWs and I am watching the episode where he has been appointed commissioner.

How the fukk did this guy continue to stay employed and get jobs from Vince>?

He has been one of the most well known wrestling characters since like 1975. Major crossover appeal and can cut a good promo. Vince sees the value in that.

He got the title shot because hogan wanted to work with him....that sums that up. And he came back as comissioner because its a role that fits and he worked well there.

This, basically. Sarge was a huge star for Vince Sr and the early days of junior's reign, was well known from his appearance in GI Joe cartoons and merch, and was also the only one willing to do the Iraq sympathizer angle. At the end of his career, with Warrior's reign being a bust, there was really nothing to lose for him. Got his big pay days and the gold watch from the company, Hogan got the belt back, everyone wins.

If not for Hogan appearing and a bunch of royalties/contract bullshyt with GI Joe, Sgt Slaughter likely would've been Vince's 80s cash cow. That face run against Iron Sheikh was getting eaten up... I think it was only the Hasbro bullshyt that cut him off until that pro-Iraq heel run (one of the GOAT heel runs incidentally)

Cuz he was super over in the GI Joe cartoon at the time.

And he was like 45 when he beat Warrior not 35.

The episode "Wrestling with Patriotism" of Legends of Wrestling featuring Sarge is well worth a watch btw - he has some of the best road stories... dude was getting legit death threats during that Iraq angle.

Yeah I had heard of him, but by the end of 1980s he looked like shyt. He was fat and old. He came out of nowhere for that title shot, wasn't even with the company a year before that.

I didn't see anyone lighting up for him crowd wise either. Yeah they hated him but that was because of the Iraqi war, guy didn't do anything to generate the heat. They coulda put your boy Jeff Jarett in that role and got the same heat.

i wouldn't say sgt slaughter couldn't wrestle..

Sarge is one of the GOAT bumpers and was one of the best wrestlers in the world for a couple of years in the early to mid 80's.

I started watching in 97' and for longest time I thought dude was complete garbage like @The Great One said but like 10 years ago I started watching his work on the territories and dude was fukking awesome :salute:

I'm 32 and slaughter was literally why i started watching wrestling because i was a HUGE sgt slaughter fan as a kid as a die hard gi joe kid. He was super beloved and his heel turn GOT A LOT OF HEAT breh...the match blew but i gotta really disagree...the turncoat gimmick ONLY worked because he was sgt slaughter. Its like Cena joining ISIS in 2016 to the kids in the front row...it was fukkin slaughter...he WAS america. Only hacksaw couldve garnered the heat slaughter did then. I was mad as fukk.
