Real emceeing is prominent in the underground (something i've argued before on here). Mainstream artist with lyrics has just about fizzle away Funny cause i can only think of a few consider mainstream that i fool with because of lyrics. Kendrick being the most known right now. You have guys like him who implement the multis, the cliff hanger or storytelling (which this guy Joyner Lucas is dope at doing) and subject matter all while keeping it structured in bar form and being lyrical. Alot of these dumb ass dudes couldn't tell you what assonance is. Or breath control ( which is why alot of these dude be out of breath at live shows and cant do one takes when recording always taking the punch-in route.......Learn to play a instrument). One of the most powerful things you can do is learn to produce----- if youre an emcee you know what you like whether it a Madlib beat or soulful Black Milk or 9th Wonder beat , even some hyphy shyt like DJ Mustard with the hi-hats. Honestly imo the "Xanax Era" as i like to call cause you have a gang of a$$hole glorify taking Percocets, Watsons etc it is only going to wear it self thin.
Also a key component that is on the underground that isn't necessarily on the mainstream is ---- freedom/liberty to craft out your own songs as oppose to being on a mainstream label - a Universal, A Interscope where you have all these corporate entities dictating to you "I need a club song". Whether folks like him or not nobody isn't running up on a Tech N9NE with that foolishness he tours when he feel like it, drops albums when he feels like it (same for his artist) and just think he just crack the Forbes List Millionaires. Not necessarily a fan of his but thats that polar opposite of not being control as oppose to being.
The thing with the whole discussion of Desiigner, who i think is wack is this ...that XXL freestyle and how it was deliver is reminiscent of the African chants based on delivery. Same as it goes for repetition or repeating the same 4/8 bars (equivalent of a hook) . Its just the message that conveys is a rather weak one imo.
