but the thing is, nas and Lupe are so inconsistent when it comes to choosing production. One song is straight up piff while the next joint is straight up dry.

the reason why dudes like lupe/nas/em pick them "boring" beats is because they want their lyrics to be @ th forefront of the music.. where as 98% of other rappers want the beat as the top priority of the song and that be the "star" of the song as opposed to what the atist is actually saying

i'm aware of this, but their is a 'happy medium' that one must fall into.

Perfect example is Ready to die. Great production but biggie still manages to not let that overshadow his bars.

Completely disagree. FNL and The Cool were produced well for Lupe. Illmatic, IWR, Stillmatic, Lost Tapes, GS, SD, HHID, Untitled, LIG all quality beats.
