Most black kids ain't trynna learn how to play an instrument...

Hip hop is more comparable to poetry or spoken word.

The lyrical aspect is more important(combined with the beat). The majority of rappers don't see themselves as 'musicians' it's not the same as Jazz, Funk or Soul. It's a different genre where a different skill set is needed.

You really can't compare these generes to hip hop. Hip Hop is it's own thing.

Also, it's great when these generes blend with hip hop, they really sound well together.

We don't listen to rap for their instrumental talent, we listen to it for their creativity and bars.
Different set of talents. And at the end of the day, who cares? It's about making the best possible music.

You can have all the talent in the world, but if you music is ass what's the point? Take people like Post Malone, he plays all instruments but he's still wack. It's like when people use that "J. Cole can rap, sing and produce" But does that make him better than Pac?

A lot of people can play instruments, few people can create great music.

You had big bands who composed some of their own music, played instruments, sang/harmoned, etc. Easily on another level of talent. A lot of hiphop is built on sampling what those guys created.

It takes years of practice to do this type of shyt.
Imagine all the Hip-Hop/Rap artist and producers that dedicated their life to their craft

the end goal of the MC is the same as poetry/spoken word/street toasts-boasts but with more on beat syncopation/actual rhyming

prosper any where on earth
This thread is at fault because, the vocal alone is in a key. Like bad and bougie. That beat is in the key of A and they rap fast because, A is a fast key. Mask off is in the key of G. That’s why it has a bounce to it. These beats have keys in them. So does the vocal. No one is reading, it’s all intuition, which is special. You can play guitar or any instrument but can you make a hit tune out of it. You can play your best and still suck because, no one’s attracted to your playing. You have to have talent to be great like slash to make a hit or Jimi Hendrix to change the culture. Songs in keys and moods make hits man. No matter what, your playing or performing

Can't compare musicians to vocalists. It's two different things.

If you are comparing hip hop "producers" to jazz/funk/soul musicians then that's a more fair comparison. Although I agree that on average the musicians from back in the day are more talented than the average producers of today, there are some nuances

1. Many producers do play instruments (piano, guitar, drums, etc.) and utilize their keyboard skills to create their sound. But hip hop is mainly an electronic form of music so that only shows up as an element of the track instead of the entire beat. Plus ain't nobody trying to be Prince out there playing every damn instrument. Unless you have a hip-hop band like the Roots, the music is not really meant to be played like that.

2. The complexity of music coming from top tier producers is not easy to master. You got a million dudes out there with MPC's/FL Studio, or whatever these cats is using nowadays, but only a few can make hit tracks.

3. Some of these same artists that we consider more talented were utilizing the beat machines and other forms of electronic music making in the late 70's - 80's. Prince/Stevie Wonder/George Clinton/Roger & Zapp etc. It was accepted as another technique to make music, and most people didn't dock them for using it.

I never really considered Rapping “music” so I wouldn’t even compare it to those other musical genres. Rapping is an art form definitely, more akin to poetry than music…you worded it correctly, you’re comparing “artists” to “musicians” which isn’t a fair comparison. Every musician is an artist but not every artist is a musician. That’s just my opinion tho, 🤷🏽‍♂️…like discussing who’s a better musician between Prince and Jay-z is not even something I can wrap my head around, pause, lol, it’s too ridiculous to even discuss. That’s like asking what’s a better fruit, apples or Lemonhead’s.

Instrumentation and singing, etc…yeah, that’s something else…specifically instrumentation.
