Do you think this new govt now has the political capital to push through funding etc for a ton of new housing? I know here in the states even if the political will exists, projects take too long, have to jump through all kinds of legal hoops, not to mention NIMBYism, and can't keep up with the increase in demand.

I think if an incredibly wealthy nation like Canada (9th in GDP but 40th in population) can't manage this issue, I don't know if anyone can.
The new government has the tools and political capital to deploy significant funding on this specific issue, but theyll need to do more to force provinicial governments and muncipalities to support its agenda, especially when it comes to zoning and development charges ( both under the purview of other levels of government).

One new thing they promised in the campaign is to re-enter the housing market place as a builder of affordable housing, in manner similar to what government did here in 50/60s. They say theyll do this along with increasing incentives (i.e. removing sales taxes, introducing tax incentives for building, etcc) for private builders for a large increase in housing starts.

We will see if theyre able to achieve this, while also tackling other major priorities (namely renegotating NAFTA again).

Honestly, I find it kinda weird how much Trump seems to like Carney. I just hope he leverages it to our advantage and we don't find out he sold them PEI or something.

│ doesn't suprise me for some reason. Trump for me doesn't seem like he cares about political lines.

│ He's obsessed with aristocratic concepts of prestige and place, where leaders regardless of position of tyranny or greatness - he praises or worships for their strength, poise or ability to project power vs the masses.... and usually the wealth and class. Same reason he respects putin. Xi. King Charles. And why he disrespects trudeau (who isn't his father, and came off lacking poise and class, or polish from someone with a boujee obsession like trump)

│ This wasn't meant to be political or an indirect jab. Just Carney's held very high positions. Some folks like to call him global elite. He's buddies and has contacts with everyone, from the king/queen, most leaders in EU, to knowing on a first name basis US institution leaders like Powell, greenspan, and the upstairs bankers at goldman, and many places wallstreet. He's been apart of bilderburg meetings, and headed the FSB which is basically the main international body that monitors world financial markets and offers recommendations to maintain stability across markets to everyone from US, Canada, France to Indonesia. He was apart of a select group of bankers and financial leaders hand picked by the pope to meet up to discuss efforts about ethical investing, climate change, and inclusive capitalism from the various parties invited. This wasn't meant to peacock his CV - its just... its very network rich in terms of names lol.

│ If this were 1850s russia - he would be the successful journey man aristocrat nobel that everyone sees as worldy and aspirational, interesting and someone people would want to be friends with. Its exactly the type of person trump regardless of platform or party - would immediately see as an 'equal' or consider himself 'equal'. Trump loves people of power to have CVs, authority and ability to influence through soft/hard power and people who have been vetted through other societies/social classes - so doesn't suprise me at all he already has started praising carney.

│ │ This is an excellent way to explain what I’ve been trying to tell people for awhile. Trump has an uncanny ability to sense a person’s “social status” as it were. It’s what makes him such an effective bully. He knows when someone is just there to kiss his ass, and he knows when someone has weaknesses or insecurities he can needle and exploit. But there’s a certain “type” of person he’s very impressed by and respects (and desires to be respected by in return). I never quite know how to describe that person so I appreciate how well you’ve put it here. And yes, as soon as Carney showed up on the scene I got the impression that he was one of those people.
│ │
│ │ I also think Trump saw PP and Danielle for what they were; snivelling, opportunistic sycophants. Effectively no different from the people he keeps in his cabinet to stroke his ego. He’s happy to use these types of people, but he absolutely never respects them.

│ │ │ To your point trump smells weakness and doesn't tend to respect it. He may be a narcissist but still seeks validation in many ways.

Carney moving fast. On first press conference announced that:

-He’s going to Washington to meet Trump next Tuesday

-King Charles will be in Parliament by end of May to deliver speech from the Throne (speech that lays out the Governments agenda for the year). Usually deliver by the Governor General who is the kings rep and technically our head of state, but has gotten the real thing. Clear appeal to national/historic symbols to separate himself from JT and the US. Also doesn’t hurt that Trump appears to be fascinated by royal pomp.

- Recommitted to doubling housing starts every year he’s in power.
