I saw it last night. Honestly I was expecting a bit more. I didn’t like the pacing of the film, I thought it moved too fast and the pay off in the third act was underwhelming. The script was kind of weak too cause the social commentary and “woke” elements they implemented were being explained to the audience, instead of letting the visuals speak for itself and the actions of the characters. Kinda like Get Out did.

I guess since Jordan Peele was producing it, I had higher expectations. I wasn’t expecting it to be on the level of Get Out but I thought the film could have done more with the story and characters. It’s definitely worth seeing if you grew up on the original CandyMan

It did seem a little film school-ish.. didn’t it.

Why is that

My TV is a LG OLED 4K with Dolby vision...fukk I look like going to a movie theater with over priced food/popcorn and people....with a mask too? :mjlol::russ:

I would be saving money along with having my own popcorn at the crib...:mjlol:

When I win I bring we with me
After watching the movie I'd say Squirrel & Patrick were pretty much on point with the assessment. :ehh: ....tho I disagree wit Patrick on points:hubie:

I did like the movie, but it’s some stuff (agenda related) that could’ve been left out. Acting and cinematography are dope though for sure
Yeah its nothing too :dame: just 2 of the background characters. It’s not a theme in the movie or anything, just something they could’ve left out. It’s worth a trip to the theater if you’re a Peele fan or looking forward to it like I was.

edit: one of the characters is kind of funny too, decent comic relief

1. Yes this is a "beautiful" film visually. This dacosta chick has a nice "filming tool box" and she went in her bag with all the different types of shots decided on. Even with the kills the focus was just as much on how can we shoot this ....as opposed to other films mostly asking how many ways can we kill off characters(all while filming each kill the same 2 or 3 ways) definitely don't regret getting out in the rain to see it. And yes the acting was on point. Even while being annoyed with some of the "preachy" dialog.

2. Spot on with your assessments

3. Pacing and overall length was fantastic for me, especially since I can clearly foresee a cut of this movie that was bogged down with a whole bunch of talking and explaining. While kinda confused on what the hell happened after the church, the overall conclusion and rational behind all the actions are clear enough to me. The whole resurrection angle/conclusion was a nice lil cherry on top. Only question I have is what happened to Helen Lyle in this mythos in relation to what was shown at the end of the original movie.

4. Spot on with your assessments. (Ironically enough the original candyman did a spot on job of pulling that off)
That said I will say this. While the preachy dialog was annoying at times; I make a distinction between the dialog and the overall story.
They knocked the story out the park.

EDIT:
I want to go a little further on that story point made above.
One of the great things about this movie is that it is obviously an extension of the original movie. I.E. Peele took the original movie elements and organically extended them through time to tell a coherent story that doesn't contradict established lore. While also being a good story/movie.

This is in contrast to movies where folks working on it...
  • Tell whatever story they want using someone elses I.P. (then act confused when fans of the I.P. dislike it)
  • Have little to no knowledge of an I.P. nor desire to learn yet feel they can pull off a faithful rendition. (then again act confused when fans of the I.P. dislike it)
