They go hand in hand. Capitalism may not have been a concept during the time of slavery but slavery in the West was rooted in the idea of "how do we expand our empires with the cheapest labor source possible?" Which is like the basic idea of Capitalism, but also significantly ties in with imperialism (and all the offshoot ideas like manifest destiny, Divine right, exceptionalism) as well too.
