Intrigues and power play have always existed in every organism whatever their purpose (financial, religious, sport-wise...). Assuming that people will differ from the basic instinct of seeking power based on their complexion is baseless. Do you think that a black bishop or pastor who drives a fancy car use religion in a spiritual way ? Do you think that there are not political purposes in tribal beliefs/rites or polytheist religions ?
Religion is both political and spiritual as it has always help control people and "civilize" them and serves as a moral compass which helps settings policies/laws in return. Both aren't mutually exclusive.
