There's a great line/lines, in that first scene, which is very typical of a certain type

Staff: How'd you find us?

Well, she went to Chapel Hill, and we went to Duke, and she want to Duke, and he's going to Princeton, and then he got into Duke.....

Like this long ass monologe of status signaling

Thought about what a black family would look like too. Like a wealthy black one. I have heard some of those convos, and there's a lot of themes worth exploring, but from a white director, probably not the right person to write a whole black family. Not sure if the writing for Belinda is even 100%. it's not BAD, but it crosses into stereotypes here and there.

I was at this spot in Laguna, about 6 years ago, it's called Studio at the Montage, and there was two couples at a table within earshot, all black and in their 50's, affluent. And one of the quotes was like "My daughter, I mean, I'll give her the 200k, but after she gets married" something like that. They were from DC, but you don't see a lot of that in San Diego.
Saxon reminds me of a lot of kids I went to boarding school and Duke with.:mjlol:

Minus the weird-ass incest vibes I’m getting :whoa:

man, this show sucks :mjlol:

it's such a bullshyt ass premise. "look how great HBO's production budget is, while we throw together an ensemble cast who blows off time on vacation"

i'll probably force myself to watch the rest

Nah, keep this shyt a cac fest, please. half of the themes being satirized don't even work if they're not cacs :hubie:
Nah, my idea has potential. This is 3 seasons with the same template basically for the family dynamic. Switch it up already.

Doesn't have to be a celebrity family. Just a regular black family with money works.

They'd definitely need a scene with nosey white people probing and trying to figure out how they can afford the trip and what they do for a living. The shyt writes itself

Nah - the show is satire that leans heavily into historied dynamics and power imbalances. Black people - and by extension the locals in these resorts - don’t really have a presence and position in the aforementioned dynamics that allows for them to be more than auxiliary characters. It would be completely detached from reality otherwise, and reality is the foundation of satire. “They exploit me, and I exploit you

First season had the bleakest ending/commentary on how you can’t - and some don’t really want to - escape the established order and exploitative relationships. The only ones that did were a gay cac that did so by dying - and the son, but his escape is arguably void of consequences because he’s ultimately a rich kid that found something “cool” to do. Belinda wanted to climb up the ladder but was ultimately used and discarded. Rachel tossed personal ambitions and happiness to the side and conformed to being a “trophy wife” and sex toy for a husband and extended family she doesn’t like. Paula is trapped in a friendship where she’s an accessory for Olivia’s “I’m not like the other white people” delusions. One of the last scenes was Olivia embracing her from behind after conversations about her knowing that Paula was an accomplice to Kai’s robbery. Kai got his life ruined by a naive and unqualified “revolutionary”.

Season 2 explored these themes further with the “white passing” Asian/Latino new rich couple wanting to fit in said order (largely due to the husband’s feelings of inadequacy towards his old roommate) which resulted in them succumbing to the same amoral behaviors the cac couple they didn’t want to be like - had, which pretty much destroyed their marriage - and turned them into a couple with “secrets”.

Again, the show is rooted in satirizing historied behaviors and dynamics that exist/came to be/are anchored by reality. Most of it doesn’t work without it. There really isn’t space or need for “black family on vacation” other than you just arbitrarily wanting something different (superficial at that). Are black people incapable of these behaviors? No, but we don’t have the historical cache to pull from. Black people by large aren’t in a position to go to these resorts and exploit others like this - even outside of socioeconomic factors - just historically, it isn’t something we’ve done. Whereas most people in the service industry have dealt with the elitist delusional cac family. That’s why satire works.

Mike does a good job at exploring auxiliary characters - Belinda, Kai, Paula (I’d even argue Paula was the first season’s protagonist) the prostitutes in Italy, etc. It never feels like the locals, (and the black characters) aren’t having their storylines/motivations fleshed out.

Keep this shyt a cac fest :hubie:

No way you went to boarding school and Duke with guys like Saxon who weren’t into incest. Zero chance.

Way they they have bridged characters through the seasons. I wouldn't be surprised if Michelle Monaghan's character (the actress/talk show host) is back next season with her younger husband who is a breh. Just like Gayle had in Scream VI. And part of their drama will be breh chasing after some younger sexier white bytch. Be on his Carlton:
