Music Producers, in a recent interview with Producer Grind, Cassius Jay (Credits: Migos, Young Thug, PartyNextDoor) talked about his secret to making 10 beats every day. In this video he explains how by cutting certain shortcuts he is able to compete with elite producers such as Metro Boomin in today's music industry. Aside from my reaction, I share my thoughts on his process and if it's necessary for other producers to use it.

I really don't like to make 10 beats in a day.
I rather work on 1 beat for a whole week and try to make it sound like an interesting instrumental track that can keep peoples interested through out the whole beat. That's what i'm trying to do.
I think today quantity gets put over quality way too much.
You can make 10 average beats but they will be forgotten within a couple of months. While good music can last for a lifetime.

Anybody who makes 10 beats a day is not a musician. Maybe 5 beats. But 10:hhh::camby:

Word, i think 5 is already a lot.
I don't make many beats but when i do i really work my ass off.
I know some people make very simple beats that actually sound much better than mines but i don't want to be looked up on as some lazy ass sample-chopper anymore.
I want to learn how to play the keyboard in the future.
I just respect real musicians more than sample-choppers even though i think sampled beats sound much better than most Trap beats nowadays.
Sample beats are real creative to though and i will always love sampling cause it brings those elements back from older music.
I actually think about 80% of Trap beats sound supercorny and unhuman.
I know that's straight up hating but i really don't like all that shyt that's on the radio today. It's just supercorny to me.

Sorry for being such an a$$hole but i just don't like it.
And i really don't think i'm that great but i think i have improved a lot since 4 years. I just need to mix better.

I mean I can see laying down 10 drum patterns a day..that is easy to me.

But me I like to take a beat as far as I can take it before moving on until I get more ideas.

Like when I feel like i'm just adding stuff onto the beat just to add stuff then I move on...

But I can lay down drum patterns all day :pachaha: it's finding a melody, bassline, other ideas that I need more time on.

There's two ways to look at this post.

One, making ten beats in a day really waters down and b*stardizes the production process. Churning out formulaic beats is the antithesis of creativity.

But I think the more constructive way of looking at it, is just as an experiment to push yourself. Like, can you make 10 beats in a day.
I used to do it all the time, I'd make an album a day and they'd all be really terrible music that I would never want anybody to hear.
But I learned a lot during those albums, and eventually had enough techniques to make more competent music.

When you're just starting out, it can be daunting to make music because what you hear is coming out of million dollar studios. And it's not like guitar or drums, there's no real starting place to learn how to make beats. You just have to do it, and whatever you do in the beginning is probably going to be incredibly amateurish, which can be disheartening.

So if you open yourself to just all out fukk it mode and decide "I'm going to make an album" or "I'm going to make x amount of beats in a day" it frees you up to not care how it sounds, and just worry about seeing the project through to the end. And if you do that enough times, you'll hopefully gain enough experience to make an album worth listening to.

he makes trap beats breh

With tight kits and vsts set up properly any semi skilled beat maker can do the same

all the tempos are the same and everyone bites each other
Agreed. There are construction kits, midi files, mixing presets etc. where all you have to do is change the sounds from a template and you have a completed beat.

Exactly... I don't really have time to make beats like that bc I'm married with a family and work in sales, but this is one of the last beats I made a while ago and it took me a few days to get all the elements to work together

Maybe not 10, but I've seen 9th wonder livestream in the studio, and that guy's process means he can make a lot of beats really fast.

He has dudes bring in culled albums for him, he puts it on the turntable, skips around until he finds some heat, then chops it up in maschine + drums, and boom he's got a banger.

He'd make like 5 beats in a stream session, and those only ran from like 7-midnight. I'm sure he could make ten in a day if he wanted.

Yeah, laying down the drums is the easiest and most fun part i think. Coming up with good chords is hard work. Making a funky bassline to.

Man, i want to stay making Hip-Hop but i hate those Battle-Rappers in my country. Some of them are straight up racist, weak, low, heartless a$$holes.
These guys literally study each other background and destroy each other on stage. I think that's terrible. It used to be very different 10 years ago. Back than it was still a sportive competition. I don't want to lose my love for Hip-Hop cause of that.
I even stopped calling my music Hip-Hop cause i don't wanna be compared to these guys.

Aye if that works for him I can't complain about it because that's his method, his workflow and he gets placements.

It's nothing that will work for the long haul and it's not organic or creative but if it works then fukk it. That's where we are at with music for the most part at this point in time anyway.
