A bunch of cats called Jellicle cats gather for one night a year, to celebrate the Jellicle ball, and sing about the cats in their group, and at the end of the night, their leader, Old Deuteronomy chooses one cat to be reborn into a new life.
Jennifer Hudson's character is Grizabella, who used to be a glamorous performing cat is old and haggard, and became an outcast.
