derrick williams lost 20 pounds coming into his first season in the league...to try to be a full time small forward....tristan thompson has gotten bigger every year...to have a more defined role....as an actual big man.

wait.. i am not saying they are the same player TODAY.. i am saying maybe they will try to get some TT out of him since that's what he used to be (when they both played the 4).. get him back in that 4 position and and play behind TT..
i say this as a second reason for signing him.. my first reasoning was to bring LBJ minutes down.. but by doing so.. they did not fix the missing Big issue...
defense goes down so badly when TT is not on the floor.. and with one spot left...(if derrick is a fit) they would still need a PG AND a big.
LeBron wants to know the ins and outs of the Heat organization in case they meet up in the playoffs.

...TT is the starting center and kevin love is the PF....so how would he play behind TT???
if anything they'll run him at the 4 and have a combination of love, tristan or frye at the 5...when downsizing.
if you're expecting derrick to do the things TT does then
outside of being able to catch an alley oop their games are nothing a like
having "energy" is not a means of comparing skillsets
he's a bad rebounder(for his size)...tristan thompson is decent at defending the rim....derrick williams is a bad team defender(that can be corrected).
he is a depth move...you viewing it as anything beyond that is reaching

I remember watching that game. It's crazy looking back how there was an actual debate who'd be the #1 pick and who's the better player between Derrick Williams and Kyrie. Even watching that game, anyone could see even though Derrick Williams scored 32...Kyrie dropped 29 and looked more impressive carrying Duke than Derrick did Arizona. Kyrie was actually creating off the dribble and breaking Arizona's defense down unlike Derrick who basically scored off dunks and wide open jumpshots created by his teammates.
In fact Kyrie was injured all year and that Arizona game was during the period he was fresh off an injury and while he still wasn't 100%. Dude was legit unguardable every single game he played for Duke and any time he touched the rock someone was getting that work.
He, DRose at Memphis and John Wall at Kentucky are still til this day the most unfukkwithable freshmen PGs I've ever seen in College Basketball. Every time one of them nikkas would get the ball it was some nextlevel phenom shyt on display.
