Chain Music: Exposing the Exploitation of Hip-Hop

Award-winning journalist Jay Sweet and Hip Hop icon Christopher “Play” Martin join forces to ‘break the chains’ of the entertainment industry

Award-winning video journalist, writer, director and producer Jadaun “Jay” Sweet will take viewers on an eye-opening journey behind the scenes of the ills of the music industry with the Nov. 12 debut of the short film “Chain Music” at the Challenger Learning Center’s IMAX Theatre in Tallahassee.

“Chain Music” explores the idea of methods used by the music industry to schematically exploit Hip Hop music, its artists, and audiences as a means to control cultural behavior.

“As a young African-American male who was afforded the opportunity to receive a college education this film hits home for me,” said Sweet, a Tallahassee resident. “Every young person does not have the opportunity to be enlightened and educated, and as such can easily be misguided. My vision is to use my work in film as a method to creatively provide insight and understanding to those most heavily impacted by the cultural manipulation that occurs in the music industry, which is arguably one of the top influencers of our youth.”

Playground Solutionz founder Christopher “Play” Martin of the pioneering Hip Hop duo “Kid ‘n Play” serves as executive producer of “Chain Music.” Martin will join Sweet during the Nov. 12 debut for a Q&A session with audience members, as well as a meet and greet with the cast and crew. The film will be shown at 7:30 p.m.

Sweet also has announced plans to develop a national tour for “Chain Music.”
“The message in this film really has something for everyone, people from all walks of life,” Sweet said. “We want to educate, empower and inspire the masses. This is a people’s film. And while it is definitely entertaining and exciting, it also serves the purpose of providing our audiences with what is rightfully theirs – information.”

“Chain Music” is the inaugural film of Take Heed Productions, an innovative production company focused on delivering a consistent uplifting message of enlightenment and inspiration about and for inner city and impoverished youth. Take Heed endeavors to use entertainment platforms to expose and redirect youth toward positive and meaningful opportunities.

As a community-focused production company, Take Heed offers community members, businesses and organizations an opportunity to participate in its endeavors by supporting its films as production partners or participating in its Indiegogo 25K Fundraising Campaign, which will help secure funding for additional productions designed to positively impact youth and underserved communities. Current Take Heed partners include, Alien Astronauts, Backpack Beatz, The Character Center, ClearHouse Productions, and Soap Boy.

Proceeds from the debut of “Chain Music” will be used to help fund the production of Take Heed’s sophomore film “Falling Black in Love.”

Looks stupid and poorly written, but I'm glad people are getting hip to the false idols of the music industry. Not to rain anyone's hopes and dreams but being under a major contemporary records is one of the highest forms of exploitation. The fascade of riches and "success" are short lived and imaginary for most artists....

I would hope this is at least common knowledge on a Hip Hop forum
or any music forum really. The opportunity seeking leeches in the music
industry have no qualms with sticking people with a bad contract and taking
as much money as legally possible from that persons hard work and leaving
them broke and destitute.

:edit: And the trailer itself reeks of the "league of doom" type world
view that conspiracy theorists have. It'll appeal to idiots who'd much
rather worry about label heads over the cliven bundy types who're voting in
politicians that'll undermine them and their march for progress in their face.
They don't need rappers who came to "Get money, smoke dope, drill and die" to do it.

Exactly, while I won't lie, the major labels do capitalize on and reinforce numerous stereotypes and falsehoods, at the same time, their also selling a dream, to the target audience and artist themselves. The only which may be real for the major artist with a bum deal(which are the majority of them), is the amount of women throwing themselves at these individuals, during the time period when believed to be hot.

Other than that from the money, to the clothes, cars, and chains everything is more or less an illusion. The philosophy behind drill, smoke, drink music is just simple ignorance sells. Catchy hooks and endeavors about the forbidden fruits sell, while conscious rap which questions life at best, take a backseat.

This be said best about anything in America, look at how many people watch and a follow a news segment on TMZ or AccessHollywood vs PBS NewsHour......

Controversy and people doing things considered to be "taboo" sells......

If you sell 500 records a month at $10 a pop on your own you are better of than 90% of the industry real talk and you're debt free. :obama: The label should only come after you're already big, or if you're a one-time artist ala Jamie Foxx. But if this is your craft, the label is the worst thing you can do to yourself IMHO, regardless of if all that Illuminati bullsh*t is true or not.
