A die-hard Deval Patrick backer is begging fellow Dems to keep an open mind about the former Massachusetts governor’s 2020 bid as the presidential candidate returns to New Hampshire Monday night with rock-bottom support and sluggish momentum in recent polls.

“Don’t rule Deval Patrick out of the race,” said John Fish, chief executive of Suffolk Construction and longtime Patrick supporter. “Here in Massachusetts we know better than anyone, once he gets a little oxygen in his tank he can really take off.”

Patrick, who hasn’t yet recruited enough campaign staffers to compete in the 2020 campaign, was a surprise victor in the packed 2006 Bay State gubernatorial race. Fish said Patrick’s hopeful message and campaign-trail charm can work the same magic across the country if given a chance.

“Give him the next three to four months to see if he can gain traction,” said Fish, adding that the ongoing impeachment hearings and Michael Bloomberg’s entrance into the race took political coverage and potential momentum away from Patrick.

The New Hampshire Primary, a key test for the former Massachusetts governor, is less than 60 days away, however, and voters remain cool to Patrick. He received less than 1% support in a WBUR poll of 442 New Hampshire voters released last week.

Democratic pols and operatives said the former governor has gained little ground in New Hampshire despite the fact that he lives only one state away.

“I frankly have not heard much if any buzz at all about his campaign,” said Brian Sullivan, a Grantham, N.H., state representative who said that notoriously fickle Granite State voters are starting to pick candidates in the crowded Democratic primary.

“For a long time people who were involved in New Hampshire politics stayed on the sidelines, but I did commit to support Elizabeth Warren. I’m hearing people say they’re supporting Sen. Bernie Sanders, and I just went past a friend and neighbor’s house and saw a ‘Mayor Pete,’ sign out there,” Sullivan said. South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg topped WBUR’s poll with 18% support in New Hampshire.

Patrick, who campaigned in South Carolina over the weekend and plans to travel to Nevada on Tuesday, still has some political firepower left in the tank, said Fish. Patrick is very close to former President Barack Obama and Obama’s former chief of staff David Axelrod.

“I think he has some very strong advisers around him, and the people who will come out in next few months to endorse him will really give him a boost,” he said. He declined to say if Obama or Axelrod will endorse or campaign for Patrick.

“I can’t speak for Obama or Axelrod, but when you speak about them there is a very clear sense of alignment on the politics between them and Deval Patrick, so I wouldn’t rule anything out,” said Fish.

Hell
Charlamagne ain't no Trump supporter.

I don't know breh, he's seems like he's pretty independent minded and doesn't trust the Dems either. He can't speak too freely due to his title but I wouldn't be surprised if he's more conservative than liberal, I know he follows Tariq on all them on Youtube. He really fronts hard to keep his name up but he may be different behind the scenes. I remember when he told Angela Rye that he might vote Independent the last election 18, he doesn't seem like a true liberal, he plays a character to keep his bread.

But Duval looks like the typical class based black liberal, dude was literally stuck with such a simple question.

2020 is gonna be moreso about Class over Race and alot of these dudes getting seriously exposed. THe internet is becoming more real than these talking heads who do nothing.

Lots of Black people don't trust the Dems (me Included). Doesn't mean we are PRO Republican/Trump supporters. The Democrats have given us tons of reasons not to trust them either.

It's ok to disagree with Charlamagne but I don't believe he's anti black. I believe he has to walk a line between being conscience while still being an employee to a major white owned corporation so I already know there is a zone he won't go into that say Tariq, Jason Black or Yvette would. But if he makes a good point, cool, I hate to have to pretend I disagree with him on every topic that I don't.
