That he has never experienced overt racism directed at himself, but probably has experienced covert racism and was naive to it and didn't notice people were being racist/he was being profiled when it was happening which I understand. I've never experienced overt racism either (but I know people who have and do on an almost daily basis) and has time has gone on I've been able to recognize when I've been affected by covert racism in hindsight and I'm better equipped to deal with it now.
