I honestly think Jay-Z is one of the most over rated rappers in the history of hiphop.

I think he is a great rapper, and has alot of great songs, but he also has so many horrible and boring songs.
take away the production on most of his songs and you just get another rapper with a good flow, good rhyme structure, good cadence, etc. but the content is his weakest point.

I will admit he has been a guy that has been really good at everything, without being great at anything.

There are better songwriters than him for sure. There are rappers that can flow better, make better hits, make better songs. Have better charisma, better voice, etc.

But no one has been able to hit on so many of those qualities as a performer/artist.

The funniest part of this whole thread and this whole comparison is that there are definitely more similarities between them then not.

:jbhmm:

So he's overrated, because he's somehow managed to take multiple qualities and meld them into one digestible rapper.

So he shoots the three above average, has hops, plays good but not earth stopping defense, has a solid low post game and can pass outta the double team, but because he's not so called "elite" at any of those he's "overrated".

So LeBron is overrated? I mean, there are better passers (CP), better shooters (Curry), better defenders (Kawhi), and higher jumpers (Lavine), but LeBron's good enough at all of those to make one semi-unstoppable player.

Exactly what do people expect from their greats?

He's overrated on here because ppl act like he's the GOAT, and untouchable.

He ain't hes had many misses to go with the hits. Its funny that you mention Lebron, because Jay-Z is a great comparison.
Both great at what they do as a total, but both definitely have flaws...and have taken some big L's in their life.

Lebron ain't the GOAT either.

To me, Hov is the greatest, but that's just me. If someone said BIG, I wouldn't argue. If they said Nas I wouldn't argue etc. Where I take umbrage is when some people (maybe not you) act as though he shouldn't be in the conversation, which is absurd.

I don't consider LeBron to be the best ever, I was just using him as an example of someone who is very good at a lot of things, elite at few if any, but when you put all the things he's very good at together, you get one of the most complete basketball players you'll ever see.

And that's the point you were kinda making to knock Hov down a peg or two, but in making your point, you inadvertently made the argument for why he is to be considered one of the greatest of all time.

Rap isn't basketball/sports, but sometimes you can think of it like 2k - players have a rating for many different attributes, and when you take the average, you get their overall rating, and there aren't many who would have a higher overall rating than Hov (IMO).

hey, I don't want to be taken the wrong way. Cuz I'm a Jay fan. Always have been. But ppl act like he is absolutely untouchable when it comes to talking about him.
To me that is what makes him so overrated by many people. Because he has flaws that STANS just don't wanna see.

IMO, Nas is and always has been my favorite MC. Is he untouchable? hell no. Dude has taken some L's and has put out some wack songs as well.

Biggie? same thing...even though TBH, he actually has the BENEFIT of having a smaller catalogue. Cuz his flaws haven't been displayed as much. Which is what keeps him in those conversations. Because what he DOES have out is dope as fukk. IMO, if Biggie was alive and kept putting out material like that he would be the ALL TIME GOAT, but that is just based off of assumptions.

Which to me, makes biggie as another dude that gets way over rated. he had no longevity, which is very unfortunate for him and us as the fans. But it ain't fair to put him in that same convo.

But why are dudes really acting like Drake couldn't or shouldn't be compared to Jay?

they are a lot more similar than not

I feel you, and where I may not agree that their similar as artists stylistically, if you take a chunk of time and isolate it, Drake does occupy the same space as Jay-Z does/did, but I don't think that's the thing that got people mad.

You can say Drake is similar or occupies the same lane as Jay, but Jay has been active for 27 years, and mainstream relevant since... 99? So 17 years of mainstream relevance, 27 years of being overall active.

Drake has been out since 2006 and there's no guarantee that in 2 years, let alone 10, that he'll be as relevant as he is today.

It's the thing people call "Recency Bias" - the belief that current and recent trends will continue in the future with little to no evidence. "My stock went up yesterday and today, it'll probably go up tomorrow, right?"

So essentially, "Drake has been hot for like 5 years, he'll probably be hot for the next 10."

DJ Mustard called his mixtape 10 Summers, and we're only 1 summer later and nobody is really checking for Mustard like they were, but when we were checking for him, I'm sure there were people who thought "10 Summers? Yeah, he might be able to do it based on what he's done so far"

If Drake's next album drops and it's not good, and he fades to Lil' Wayne territory aka active, OK, somewhat relevant, but not the hottest, it'll make threads like these seem stupid.

People are trying to crown him prematurely is all I'm trying to say. He still has a LONG way to go.

On the flip side though, dudes are acting like he WON'T be around over the next few years.

I don't know, You don't know, no one knows. and on top of that I really don't care if he does. like I said earlier, Drake is cool. I ain't got any issues with him, my whole thing is that He and Jay are in the same lane.

And lets be 100% real...ppl weren't really checking for Jay like that over the last few years.
