It's one of terms where the masses have no idea where the term truly originated from and wouldn't use it if they knew otherwise.
I personally would more so refer to it as righting the wrongs of the past, which is essentially what's happening right now. The term "cancelled" doesn't even really apply to these situations as the majority of these celebrities (outside of a few of them) will be just fine. The majority of the time, talent trumps (no pun intended) controversy.

Dixie Chicks literally had their careers destroyed for criticizing warmongering GWB back in the EARLY 2000's. People have been suffering consequences for their actions from the general public as long as time has existed. True, but you open yourself up to criticism when you aren't keeping the same consistency depending on the person and whether you like them or not. That's why I find the concept of what's going on rather disingenuous in a way.
It's why I said in the Teigen thread that people need to operate in silence or keep their opinions about other transgressions to themselves as cancel culture can easily happen to them these days. Especially since the precedent has been set that allegations are enough to do you in.
