Some have defended Barkley, saying that Barkley’s comments were about basketball, while James’ were personal.
That’s not true, even at face value. In fact, Barkley’s were far more personal than James–particularly, with the sentence, “He don’t want to compete.”
I’d intended to compile a list of times that Barkley has taken pot shots at James, but SBNation’s Kristian Winfield beat me to it and did a fantastic job. Here’s a short bullet list. For the links and details, click the link. I don’t want to steal credit.
- Criticized LeBron for talking about his upcoming free agency (2008): “If I was LeBron James, I would shut the hell up. I’m a big LeBron fan, he’s a stud. You gotta give him his props. But I’m getting so annoyed that he talks about what he’s going to do in two years.”
- On leaving Cleveland for Miami (2010): “I thought that his little one-hour special was a punk move. I thought them dancing around on the stage was a punk move, and I thought he should’ve stayed in Cleveland. Him joining Dwyane Wade’s team was very disappointing to me.”
- On hearing about LeBron taking mental notes of his critics (2010): “I heard about LeBron’s little tweet today that he’s remembering everybody who said anything bad about him,” Barkley said. “And he said ‘everybody.’ Well, I want him to make sure that he puts my name on that
- .”
- On LeBron’s movie: (2015)” “LeBron should call this Trainwreck 2 ’cause the (2015) Finals was Trainwreck 1.”
- Defending Draymond Green’s nut-punch to LeBron (2016): “You’re supposed to pop him in his junk if he steps over you like that,”
