Always went with the fire types on my first playthroughs outside of Gen 6 & 7 (Because Greninja and Decidueye are the truth, brehs.) because outside of Gen 6 where you can have like 3-5 fire evolution lines before the 2nd gym, you never got any GOOD fire types until around midgame while grass and water types are mad common.
...And because before Gen 6, all the grass starters except Treeco and maybe Snivy were ass.

Charmander. On my first playthrough I had no idea how to beat Brock or Misty with him, so I ended up grinding to a level 20 Charmelon for Brock and Charizard to take down Misty.
