Depends on where you stay, but for the H there's websites that list all the free/cheap events happening during the month/year.

Its not a lot of money but I would rather spend that $50 towards a vacation than satisfying a chick's hunger or thirst on a date.

If you're in los angeles take them to the getty center. Its a very large and free art gallery museum. You can walk through, make fun of all that art and or appreciate it. Theres a grassy area in the back where you can talk.

Huntington library - botanical garden. Huge. You can walk around this place for hours and not see everything. Good for a artsy chick, or when your mother is in town

Aboretum - another botanical garden in LA county. See above for its purpose.

Any place that you can walk around and use set pieces as a buffer for conversation is ideal. You'll have time to get to know one another, clown and laugh. The movies is not a good place to do this.
