I’m partial to NOLA and Miami. Atlanta is great too; Chicago looks great aesthetically but I haven’t been able to appreciate their downtown since I was working and not visiting socially.
Also, lowkey, downtown Austin is very nice. San Antonio’s river walk downtown is also very nice.

IDK if it's the best because I never been there but a couple days ago I went to downtown Tampa for the first time since moving to Florida and I was 
Downtown Tampa is so much better than the Florida surbub I live in
You can cross the street without pressing some stupid ass sensor
Foot traffic and people walking outside
Lots of shade to walk in so you aren't getting cooked by the sun
Only bad thing about downtown Tampa is there isn't many takeout food options
As someone who moved from NYC to a surbub DAMN it felt good to be in a major city again

You're the only one to mention crime. But while we're on the subject, Chicago and Cook County has the most homicides in the country every year and the murder rate in some neighborhoods rivals that of dangerous cities in third world countries.
Downtown is cool though
It used to be like the 5th largest city in the US at one point. It’s still major, I would compare it to Pittsburgh. One thing is certain though, Cincinnati downtown shyts on Clevelandnever been to Cincinnati.....is that even a major city tho
