Technically you can get got anywhere within city limits, but most of that violence is concentrated on the far south side. Basically if you arent with the shyts, you really shouldnt have a problem. Ive got friends and family who are, however, its just a case of somebody out the blue wanting to get to someone through me.
You should be fine in 80% of place on Chicago, though.

Chicago is a beautiful, fun, culturally rich city. In the summer, I sometimes think its the best city in the US.
But that south and west side....
And some of Pilsen, Uptown, Rogers Park, and even Hyde Park and Logan can be murky. But these areas are mostly safe.

I'm spoiled because I spent 5 years in Washington D.C. And crime is essentially non-existent as it's too expensive for people in that element to live there. In D.C., most of the crime has been pushed out to SE DC and PG county. You can basically walk through 60% of the city at 1am (i have) and not feel like you're in danger.
I do think Chicago offers more as a city than D.C. does but, I have serious reservations about the crime. I guess I would have to stay on the North Side. I want to be able to make a quick run to the CVS at night without having to worry about stray bullets.
I guess I gotta visit and get a feel for the place.

I definitely prefer Chicago to D.C. There's a lot more to do and D.C. can be stifling at times.
Try downtown, Gold Coast, Southport, East Lakeview, Ravenswood, Andersonville, Lincoln Park, or Roscoe Village. Great areas with great walk scores and low crime.

What more important is the police officers who kill 3 out of 100 nikka. This is a gov started epidemic with crack cocaine and single mother households. That the government promoted and now we got stuff like this. The chi and detroit and the bay got some of the craziest nikkas. These killing don't make sense
