I don't think alotta ppl realize the 70s were alot more dangerous than the 2000s. Alotta cities were just as bad in the 70s as they were in the 90s.

Like @Barnett114 posted, Chicago had 970 murders in 74.

Cities like LA, Houston, NY were getting 700+ murders a year in the 70s

A lot of factors went into that. The war ended and you had a lot of soldiers coming home. A recession always happens because a lot of the economy relies on that. Plus you had white flight. Cacs were running from cities and business went with them unfortunately. You also had Nixons deal with China that sent a lot of manufacturing jobs out the country.

But on average, most of the crime that gets sensationalized is in the worst sectors of the city(Austin, Englewood, Roseland) And it's mostly gang shyt. Chicago is an anomaly. And even with that being said, their murder per capita isnt even the highest. Crime nationwide has been on a steady decline for like the last 40 years. Anybody older than like 25 should know that black neighborhoods now aren't like the 80's and 90's when nikkas was really out here gun slingin. For that specific community it might take something drastic. But on a nationwide level, crime is down and there's a reason racists cherry pick chicago as a talking point.

I definitely prefer Chicago to D.C. There's a lot more to do and D.C. can be stifling at times.

Try downtown, Gold Coast, Southport, East Lakeview, Ravenswood, Andersonville, Lincoln Park, or Roscoe Village. Great areas with great walk scores and low crime.
