A judge set bail at $100,000 today for two women facing child endangerment charges in connection with the death of two children in a fire at their West Englewood neighborhood home early Saturday.

Prosecutors said Tatiana Meakens, 23, and Britany Meakens, 22, left four children unattended in an apartment heated with space heaters and a hot plate while the two women attended separate parties.

Tatiana and Britany had agreed that Tatiana -- the mother of the two children who died -- would watch the kids so that Britany could attend a housewarming party, said Cook County assistant states attorney Jamie dikkler.

But after receiving a phone call, Tatiana left to go to a CD release party in Blue Island and returned hours later, only after she was told of the fire, dikkler said.

Yeah, something like this happened in Birmingham about 4 years ago. This chick left her children to go to a Social Savings party and I think one or 2 of the children died in the fire. It's sad and just goes to show that if you can't get someone really trustworthy to watch your kids, then you don't need to go anywhere.
