Some of us have spoken about this in the other, much bigger Chicago thread (search button maybe?
) but as someone who has decided to become a pillar in the community with my program and others I've been affiliated with, I can say that much of this is media agenda and hype. That's not to say that there isnt crime...unfortunate, deplorable crime. But as bad as the media wants to focus on this aspect, they won't tell you that violent crime is systematically down. They wont tell you that it used to be so much worse, so much more vicious. That wont sell papers, wont demand high commercial ads and wont boost ratings.
The one thing that has changed is the fact that while in the past, the age bracket of violent crimes was much more broad and ranged to an older demo-graph, now, the majority of violent crimes are being committed by a much younger age group, albeit to a lesser degree than before, but much more able to be romanticized by the media. Before, shorties were around crime, yes. Even committed crimes, yes. But the violent offenders were typically older men, older gangsters. Men who over years had created a space for themselves that warranted them to protect/conquer with violence. Once that generation was systematically incarcerated, the 14-21 age group that were mostly petty crime offenders, or in the process of being groomed for harder crimes lost leadership, there was no structure to adhere to. No fallout for violent actions that the OGs would've deaded for the sake of jeopardizing their empire. An empire this younger gen is unable to attain. They do however thirst for notoriety and with the emergence of social media, it made things so much harder to control.
Crime is down. Violent crime is down. Within that crime drop, youth crime has risen and media attention has risen. Its a plot that America has, starting with Chicago, to remove civil rights of Black America by projecting false claims of our ability to control our youth to the world. Using the youth as the catalyst to infiltrate and lay false claims through the news circuits, it undermines us and paves the road for our community to deemed indigent.
EDIT: Im on the subway and using my cell so if some of that seems out of wack from grammatical errors, I apologize.
