I honestly think he wouldn't be as popular today if it wasn't for Young Chop making his beats. I'm a chief keef fan myself, but basically I love the punk/trap rap sound.

the bang mixtape was what caught his 1st co-signs from Lil B and Soulja Boy. Don't Like was already doing good numbers on YouTube before Kanye co-signed so I can see his reasoning for not taking his co-sign. While not the smartest move, his no show for the Hate Being Sober vid seems like it was planned as he didn't want 50 (who is on the verge of falling off) piggybacking of his shyt. If Hate Being Sober blew like Don't Like, best believe he would be getting those type of comments from detractors saying "it only blew coz of 50/Wiz anyway".
