same with the Chinese railway they just built in Kenya from Mombassa to Nairobi this year. That shyt is a major gamechanger. I get the whole "chinese taking over" skepticism, but you can't deny these projects change the lives of the people in a major way. Eventually they want to get all of East Africa connected

Yep...

And the major Haitian cities being interconnected would do wonders.

There probably happy, a strong haitian economy means less of a stressor on the Dominican immigration system / economy and more money coming into it via wealth from Haitians coming and doing business in the DR.

Overall if the Chinese stick to it this is a good deal for the haitians based on the fact that it is not some vague "aid package" its concrete infrastructure that Haiti needs, ultimately the best thing that could come from this is the building of Chinese plants and the creation of manufacturing jobs for hundreds of thousands of haitians (think Brazil), unfortunately we should expect a certain level of exploitation and corruption involved (from all sides) when there are billions of dollars at stake.

Also make no mistake this is a long term power move by the Chinese, if this even remotely works in Haiti expect to see similar deals all over Central America too

DR would HATE a successful Haiti. They use Haiti as scapegoat and to themselves feel better/superior.

Above the fray.
That poster stated "is the fact its one of the, if not the most defrosted places in the world. That turns the soil mostly unusable for agricultural purposes."
The articles I posted refutes his claim.
I agree that deforestation is evident in Haiti but not to the extent only 2% forest is left or as that Dominican poster stated "turns the soil usable".
There is plenty of agriculture grown in Haiti. The problem is that the technology used is obsolete and can not keep up with the demand of the growing population.
Also FYI...the Rice Importation is the doing of Clinton who made Haiti lowered the imports tariffs on rice from the USA to damn near zero.
There was no way local Haitian farmers could compete.
How could you not know this and claim to be Haitian...

First of all, I called BS on the article and the author of the article, not on you so there's no intended disrespect like I stated. We are discussing and debating points here.

I believe that the lack of foliage in Haiti has altered the climate (ground temperature/ rain levels) to the extent that it's damaged the agricultural output of the country.

I read the author of the article post a misleading comment about the % of trees in Haiti being similar to that of USA at 30%. I'm going to read the entire article, but at first glance a more relevant comparison would have been to other islands in the region...and especially to mountainous countries where lack of trees has obvious results after each rainfall.

Rice importation..according to the article posted earlier to me began in 86 under Reagan....and probably when Baby Doc was on his way out . I'm aware of US strong arm tactics when dealing with other countries..I've alluded to it several times in this thread...and I'm aware of the trickery used to get rid of the indigenous Haitian boars.

I still contend that the climate needed to grow rice is no longer occurring regularly in Haiti and that the deforestation in Haiti has been severe enough to alter the conditions for the agriculture that used to take place.

Anyone gonna take any shots at this? @ZoeGod @Dip @I_Got_Da_Burna @Mega

Former Haiti Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe is good friends with Paul Kagame. And President Kagame is a good friend of Haiti, he wants to see us win and break free from France/USA dependence.
I am almost certain Lamothe and Kagame are behind the scenes in bringing China to Haiti.
Kagame knows the situation that Haiti is in, seeing how 20 years ago Rwanda was in a similar predicament in which NGO's were running rampant in Rwanda with no oversight.
The whole effort of Haiti trying to gain acceptance into African Union was spearheaded by Lamothe with support from Kagame. Unfortunately that did not plan out accordingly. :francis:

Imagine if Haiti can properly secure a infrastructure deal with China and finally gain acceptance into the African Union...:banderas:

the main reason Haiti imports rice because of the US
https://www.ers.usda.gov/webdocs/publications/39144/56601_rcs-16a-01.pdf?v=42401

and the article doesn't ignore deforestation problems and if you have the stats than please provide it

here's a much more recent picture that the article uses
Haiti_Satellite.jpg

its not a strawmen, the poster mentioned that Haiti is one of the most deforested countries in the world...presumably based on that widely circulated NatGeo picture

ok thanks

I wrote that "Haiti used to not import rice, it does now.....that's a function of a number of factors, but I'd assume that decreased fertility of soil and lower rain totals has to factor in."

When I said it was a function of a number of factors...I figured US intervention and the bending over by Haitian leaders was part of it.
I'm gonna read the entire article because I'm reading conflicting info when I skimmed it. As long as he acknowledges that deforestation is an issue and challenge for Haiti moving forward I won't quibble over the % of trees left.

WOW!!! I seriously did not know this. I'm not a big fan of Kagame[his role in the DRC], but if he is about the stabilization of Haiti then he has my respect.

Yes, Haiti NEEDS beneficial non-Western partner whether it be Africa, China, or Latin America. I don't know about Haiti joining the AU but it getting the same deal Rwanda got with China would be :banderas:

Also Haiti does have fertile land. My grandpa's farm in Petite Gouave is very fertile. L'artibonite is known in Haiti for its fertile soil. My dad's side of the family have farms in August Caves and those lands are fertile. The deforestation myth is overblown. Haiti is an agriculture goldmine that given the right investment could flourish.

Elaborate on the bolded. Curious...

Because Rwanda is very mountainous like Haiti and yet their agriculture economy is going strong.

There is plenty of fertile land. This is why during the days of slavery the island was called Pearl of the Antilles. The valleys between the mountains are very fertile. Haiti's agriculture issues is the land laws are very outdated and not regulated by the govt.

How can this be fixed? In your opinion.
