1 - Most of America's debt is owned by the American people
2 - Japan overtook China as the top foreign holder of American debt
3 - China can't relinquish that debt without destroying its own economy (and the world's too). Doing that would cause massive civil unrest in China.

Remember when that US reconnaissance plane collided with a Chinese jet and emergency landed on the island of Hainan where the Chinese seized the crew and raped the plane? George W didn't do anything about that either---we fukking paid them the lodging costs for the prisoners and the cost to FedEx the plane back. They know the Chinese leadership don't give a fukk and can take pain for a lot longer than we can---and control the internal media.

Obama created the TPP to cut China out of Asia-Pacific markets. Because of the inability of American citizens to recognize the imperial power games going on, they elected an anti TPP candidate.
Also, the Philippines is rankling under American control and if the Philippines isn't part of America's chain of islands surrounding China (look at a map of East Asia) then China could have greater access to the Central Pacific

The funny thing is that most Americans support America's global hegemony. It's just that they also tire of war and the eventual humiliations which come with Empire. For every Opium War, Britain had a Siege of Khartoum/the Afghan defeat of the 1840s or the Fall of Sinagpore.
Anyway, Americans don't protest the imperialist agenda because they want to preserve what's left of their democracy. They do this because they fear that their culture/livelihoods are at risk from foreigners. Which isn't true, but when one of your major political parties prizes itself on ignorance and xenophobia
