A "cruel" festival devoted to dog meat is going ahead in China despite protests by animal rights campaigners.
The annual celebration in the city of Yulin in the south of the country sees dogs being packed into cages before being killed, skinned and cooked for thousands of diners.
However, China's growing animal rights movement has responded with increasing determination.
Photographs from previous festivals, which show dogs being kept in cages and their meat being eaten, have sparked outrage on China's social networking websites.
Du Yefung, the founder of the Boai Small Animal Protection Centre, said: "We have seen animals beaten just before being cooked. The more we inspect, the more cruelty we discover."
Activists have staged a number of protests in Yulin since the beginning of June and had called on the local government to stop the event this Friday from going ahead.
But Ms Du said officials had previously explained they were unable to shut it down.
