Remember my English made us read this in high school

I remember it like yesterday in my all-white high school humanities class. It was one of three books we read for our Existentialism reading along with Sartre and Camus. Was the first book by an African I read. Wasn't a fan of existentialism at the time but the book certainly left an impact on me.

Edit: Actually, Achebe was the second author. I read Cry, the Beloved Country before that. Alan Paton was from South Africa.

ABUJA, June 9 (Reuters) - Nigeria's President Bola Tinubu has suspended central bank Governor Godwin Emefiele with immediate effect, following ongoing investigation of his office and planned reforms in the financial sector, the head of the government said on Friday.
Tinubu criticised Emefiele's handling of the currency and monetary policy at his inauguration last week and called on the central bank to work towards a unified exchange rate.

Emefiele's suspension comes after a meeting with Tinubu last week.
"President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has suspended the Central Bank Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, from office with immediate effect," the government said in a statement.
"This is sequel to the ongoing investigation of his office and the planned reforms in the financial sector of the economy."
Emefiele has been directed to hand over operations to the deputy governor, who will act as the central bank governor pending the conclusion of investigation and the reforms, the statement said.

Financial markets were closed when the news of Emefiele's suspension was announced. Markets will open on Tuesday after a public holiday on Monday.
Nigeria is facing severe dollar shortages, forcing many citizens and business to seek foreign exchange on the black market, where its naira currency has progressively weakened.

Former President Muhammadu Buhari, was in power for eight years, had sought to keep the naira strong as a matter of national pride, but that became unsustainable during an oil price crash in 2016. To avoid a large devaluation, multiple exchange rates were introduced.
Emefiele has been selling dollars at various rates to individuals and businesses to manage the demand, mask pressure on the naira and conserve its dwindling reserves.
He has been adjusting the naira gradually on the official market to avoid a large devaluation. On Wednesday, the central bank allowed the naira to weaken by 2% on the official market to a record low.

The Chairman of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, and Microsoft co-founder, Bill Gates, will on Monday meet President Bola Tinubu at the State House, Abuja.

Dangote disclosed this after a closed-door session with Tinubu at the Aso Rock Presidential Vila on Friday.

“I did not come to do much. I only came to inform the President about our visit with Microsoft co-founder and my friend Bill Gates. We will both see the President on Monday when we come together,” he told State House correspondents.

Although Dangote did not reveal the purpose of Monday’s visit, it is believed to be part of ongoing consultations Tinubu is having with key leaders within the local and global business community.

On June 8, The PUNCH reported that the President received Exxon Mobil Executives; Liam Mallon, Richard Laing and Mrs Adesua Dozie in a private meeting at the Villa.

In his inaugural speech on May 29, Tinubu promised local and foreign investors that he will “review all their complaints about multiple taxation and various anti-investment inhibitions.”

“We shall ensure that investors and foreign businesses repatriate their hard-earned dividends and profits home,” he added.

The President also promised to pursue industrial policies that will “utilise the full range of fiscal measures to promote domestic manufacturing and lessen import dependency.”

While targeting a higher GDP growth and lower unemployment rates, he said “We intend to accomplish this by taking the following steps; first, budgetary reform stimulating the economy without engendering inflation will be instituted.

“Second, industrial policy will utilise the full range of fiscal measures to promote domestic manufacturing and lessen import dependency. Third, electricity will become more accessible and affordable to businesses and homes alike.

“Power generation should nearly double and transmission and distribution networks improved. We will encourage states to develop local sources as well.”

It’s not an ethnic thing

Emefiele was a stooge of Buhari. The new President wants someone only loyal to him.

I don’t even know if Emefiele identifies as Igbo.

Required reading.

We had a choice of what to pick in HS and just picked it because the author was black and had no intention reading it anyway over the summer. Mom made me read it and I actually loved it and could really relate to the story. I still have that book.

Fantastic writer. I read this at 15 or so and was just blown away by it. I remember we had to read "The Good Earth" either that same year or the year before and the different in quality of writing and storytelling was night and day, not to mention the power of the history he was telling. In college I took an African lit course and made my class project about the full trillogy.

Also, I consider it the all-time GOAT title for a book.
