Jay didn't really get a pass, he still caught criticism from folks like Bill O'Reilly. The difference is that Jay continued to make hits that kept people talking about his music rather than him stabbing Un. Nobody talks about the drugs, because as everybody's said, Jay talks about that himself.
Another thing is that Chris Brown is an R&B/Pop artist, he's held to a higher moral standard than a Rap/Hip Hop artist. Rappers often depict events that happened in the streets in first person (whether it's true or not). Rappers also make music that exposes the not so innocent side of society. So when a rapper is involved in something illegal, it's not something that's going to garner as much attention. Will they catch heat from the media? Of course they will, but not at the magnitude of an R&B/Pop artist. It's why people will make a big deal of Rihanna lighting one up, but Snoop pictured doing he same won't even be mentioned.

The moment you become famous is the moment your dirty laundry has a high potential of getting aired out. There's a reason all these celebrities pay for PR and try to keep a good image. Who gives a shyt if she forgave him? Many women "forgive" people for beating the shyt out of them. Doesn't make it right, not to mention that he keeps pulling all these stupid stunts. I don't care that he beat Rihanna or that Jay stabbed Un, that shyt doesn't matter, I just find it funny that Chris Brown pulls the "well this other famous person also did bad stuff" in hopes that it'll take heat off him.
