He more than likely didn't think that the end result would be him getting fired considering the fact that they still kept him on air after the news originally came out.

Cuomo's ratings were already in the toilet after the incident anyways, so it didn't matter in the grand scheme of things and only made their decision easier. His female viewers had tuned out and weren’t watching anymore because of the situation.

Williams had to work his way back up for years when he got relegated to the dead news hour shift. In his defense, he made the best of the situation and made his show into a hit, which helped repair his image and now he gets to go elsewhere.

Wouldn’t surprise in the slightest if they try and make a run at Brian Williams, which would be ironic but a good replacement.
