Do boxers or UFC fighters even have possession of the belts? I think it’s dumb nonetheless.

In UFC, the champion never actually enters the octagon with their belt because the UFC makes a new one for every title fight to award to the winner. So the champion does have possession of a belt, but it's probably at home. For example, Demetrious Johnson was only a one-time UFC champion, but he got a new belt for every title defense.
