Different styles....so to each it's own. But I personally appreciate Dave's mind more. Some cats are just jesters that can tell jokes and make you laugh. It's a different skill set when someone is on stage and forces you to think your way thru HIS narrative and at the end, your own life experiences, knowledge of the topic, etc allows YOU to make yourself laugh. A good example of this was Dave's "How old is 13, really?" bit. As an audience member you're posed with the question and you allow yourself to settle on where you were at 13. At the end of the bit, you're laughing because him simply telling a story and giving two examples of 13, forces you to not only find your own truth somewhere in there, but the whole audience, regardless of where they find their own truth at, ends up at the same laugh. He's brilliant. That's why his contemporaries don't hesitate to give it up to him. There's an Hot 97 interview where Kevin Hart tells a story of him and Rock balling their notes up after watching Dave for 20 mins. There's a clip on youtube where the ultimate hater, Katt Williams, doesn't hesitate to give Dave his props. Dave is more Carlin than Eddie. Patrice and Bill Burr are in the same vein. Their minds are simply better than ours. To me, Rock just tells jokes.
when it comes to modern stand up, dave is on his own level. Only patrice could challenge him.
