The biggest problem with final fantasy is that for about a decade they have hamstrung themselves by releasing exclusively on PlayStation 1st. Game development has done nothing but grow in price and the amount of games released are more than most people can play.
So Square has been releasing these costly games that sell good to decent and the price keeps going up but the people that are checking for them keeps decreasing. And square can't even catch the hype bubble wave of a big release because the games are exclusive for 1 year or so.
As amazing as E33 is, the reason it was able to win GOTY while not being a 1st party title was because it was playable day 1 everywhere (mostly because of PC) and word of mouth, which allowed it to snowball month after month, as a topic of conversation.... and before y'all start smacking your lips yes Gamepass helped with that. Tons of folks that wouldn't have dropped 30-40 on a jrpg turn base game gave it a shot and word of mouth continued to spread.
And it's wild y'all in here talking about how amazing and peak combat, graphics and the overall experience of Rebirth is, but when it was time for GOTY last year I WAS THE ONE ROOTING FOR FINAL FANTASY 7 REBIRTH over astrobot. Now after putting Astrobot up over it as the superior game y'all want to back track on why it's superior to E33
It was clear Rebirth as a package deserved it over Astrobot.
