You know.....in 2003 i woulda told you that his second album was the best outta X's first 3 albums but I revisted that album and his other two a few years ago and it aged horribly. I think Then there was X was unjustly scrutinized because of Party Up but that album aged GREAT imo. Better than his second album.

The stan and nostalgia in me REALLLY wanted to give his first 3 yes as they are ppersonal classics but the 2nd and 3rd are not if i was being unbiased.

Yes on the first two, no on the last 3...

...but it was close, on the 2nd and 3rd.

At first I was like "doesn't everybody know 'One More Road To Cross'?" But then I thought about it and decided maybe not.

The second one came down to this: I know if I walked into a room and said "Flesh of my flesh, blood of my blooooooooooood..."
a good number of people would say "ALL MY NICCAS GET DOWN LIKE WHAAAAT?"

IDAHIH is an incredible album, I love how X incorporates the religious stuff into his albums, in constant conflict with the devil and the sinful aspect, but also having conversations and general awareness of God to counteract the evil. He also has one of the greatest voices and deliveries to pull it off sincerely.

My only problem when rappers bring God into their songs is when they'll have a song talking about God, and then on the very next track go back to talking about killing people. How are you going to follow a song about God with that? I felt, do one or the other, whatever the lane is you decide to go in, but that was just odd to me. (Though I suppose it reflects real life, where you have in the past and can have now people talking about God and killing people [even claiming to do it in God's name], but that's another topic.)

Why are people voting yes for Flesh Of My Flesh? It's one of DMX's weakest albums in my opinion.

Agreed and I wasn't really a fan of his first tbh. I traded it with some kid around my way for the Wyclef album

I think he knows he's conflicted, and while you may have a point generally about hypocrisy or what not, I think in DMX's case especially it's a real thing he has to deal with. I mean not so much killing people but the encompassing idea of doing something bad. As you just said, a reflection of real life, albeit more dramatised for the sake of the album.

Damien is probably my favourite DMX song, or at the very least it has the best hook in hip-hop, along with Moment of Clarity.

I voted the first album as classic and even that is debatable to me.

Flesh of my flesh is the greatest album to listen to while high though.

Wherever nikkas need to be told on
That first one is undeniable. Especially to drop a dark, grimy album like that during the peak of the shiny-suit era. shyt was just a wildly different kind of energy than what was commercially popular at that time. And he balanced that rawness and grittiness with a certain kind of introspection and honesty that only he could bring and that made the music more interesting than just your average nikka talking about street shyt and the dirt he did. There was depth here--you listened and felt the nikka was gangsta, authentic, crazy, and spiritual all at once. Simply put, that nikka X, specifically on his debut, represented the voice of the streets for me.
